Pinkard Construction broke ground on The Town of Windsor Community Recreation Center Expansion July 24, 2015.
A sizeable crowd gathered on the open lawn that will soon be the home to the new addition, including an indoor pool, new track, and expanded fitness area. The ceremony included speeches from Melissa Chew, Windsor’s director of parks, recreation and culture, who noted, “This expansion will enhance the quality of life in Windsor.”
Other speakers included Mayor Pro Tem Myles Baker who thanked Windsor residents for their support of the .75% sales tax increase they approved this past November which will repay the bonds the city sold in June to fund the $16.7 million project.
A large sand pile filled with colorful plastic beach toys served the dual purpose of sandbox for the many children who attended the event and the site of the ceremonial shoveling of dirt – or sand in this case. Representatives from the town, Barker Rinker Seacat Architecture (BRS), Greenplay, LLC and others stepped up to man the plastic shovels and buckets and give the project its official start.
Designed by Barker Rinker Seacat Architecture, the expansion will add 39,000 sf to the existing recreation center and will include an indoor pool with slides and lap lanes, a spa, an indoor running and walking The project is expected to break ground in early next month and be complete in August 2016.
